How to Choose the Best DTF Film for Your Printing Setup
Use this DTF film selection guide to learn how to choose DTF film by comparing peel methods, single-sided and double-sided coatings, film thicknesses and sample results.
The best DTF transfer film for your business is the one that works with your printer, ink, adhesive powder, fabric and production workflow. Use this guide to shortlist films, identify the printing side and compare samples before placing a bulk order.
01 / How to choose DTF film for your application
Start with your printer, film format, target fabrics and preferred peel timing. Compare suitable models under the same test conditions to find the best DTF film for your application.
- Equipment & format
- Peel workflow
- Model shortlist
- Sample validation
Record first
- Printer model and usable film width
- Ink and powder in use
- Target fabrics and transfer designs
- Preferred peel workflow
Confirm before ordering
- Model and printing-side identification

02 / Hot peel vs cold peel DTF film
The main difference between hot peel and cold peel DTF film is when the carrier is removed after heat pressing. Hot peeling allows earlier removal under the selected model's instructions; cold peeling requires the transfer to cool completely. Instant peel films are designed for immediate removal under their specified conditions. Compare release quality and handling time in your actual workflow.
Swipe the table horizontally to see all columns.
| Peel category | Handling after pressing | What to compare |
|---|---|---|
| Instant peel | Peel immediately under the model's specified conditions to reduce cooling wait. | Release consistency, transfer edge detail and handling time in your workflow. |
| Hot & cold peel | Choose hot or cooled peeling under the selected model's instructions. | Compare the peel conditions you intend to use and the finished transfer result. |
| Cold peel | Allow the transfer to cool completely before peeling. | Complete release, edge detail and cooling arrangements in your production process. |

04 / Single-sided vs double-sided DTF film
Thickness
A thinner PET carrier offers lightweight handling, while a thicker carrier provides added support during film handling and production. Compare feeding, handling and release behavior with your printer. Thickness alone does not determine the finished transfer quality.
Coating configuration
Single-sided and double-sided describe the film's coating configuration. Double-sided DTF film does not mean that both faces can be used for printing. Compare the selected models for printer feeding, handling and transfer performance, and identify the designated ink-receptive surface.
How to identify the DTF film printing side
Use the supplier's roll label, loading diagram or model instructions to identify the ink-receptive face. Do not rely on gloss or touch alone, especially with double-sided matte films. Confirm the roll winding direction and which face reaches the printheads before loading.
If the printing side is unclear, ask for model-specific identification instructions and verify with a small sample print before a production run.
Special-effect films may require a different process. Follow the selected product's instructions rather than copying standard-film settings.
05 / How to use DTF transfer film in a sample trial
Use the following workflow to compare DTF transfer film samples. Start with the selected model's instructions, document the complete setup and change one variable at a time when investigating a result.
- Identify print side
- Apply powder
- Cure
- Heat press
- Peel & evaluate
- Identify and load the printing side. Confirm the ink-receptive face, roll direction and printer feed requirements.
- Print the test artwork. Use the artwork orientation, color and white-ink settings required by your DTF printer and RIP workflow.
- Apply adhesive powder. Apply the selected powder to the wet printed ink and remove excess according to the consumable instructions.
- Cure the adhesive. Follow the powder and equipment instructions, recording the actual curing conditions.
- Heat press onto the fabric. Use the selected film's recommended temperature, time and pressure with the intended garment fabric.
- Peel and evaluate. Follow the model's peel timing. Apply a second press if specified, then inspect detail, release, adhesion and feel. Complete the agreed wash evaluation before scaling up.
DTF film sample test record

08 / DTF film selection questions
What is the best DTF film?
The best DTF film is the model that matches your printer, film format, fabric and production workflow while delivering the print and release results you need. Start with your preferred peel method, then compare suitable samples using the same artwork, ink, powder and fabric.
Is hot peel or cold peel DTF film better?
Hot peel allows earlier carrier removal, while cold peel requires complete cooling. Instant peel films are designed for immediate removal after pressing under their specified conditions. Choose by your handling process, release consistency, edge detail and finished transfer results.
Can I print on both sides of double-sided DTF film?
Double-sided refers to the coating configuration. Print on the designated ink-receptive face, identified using the supplier's instructions for the selected model.
Is thicker DTF film always better?
No. A thicker PET carrier provides added support during handling, while thinner carriers offer a lighter option. Thickness alone does not determine print quality, adhesion or wash durability. Compare it together with coating, peel method and actual sample performance.
What should I send when requesting DTF film samples?
Share your printer model, film width or sheet size, ink, powder, fabric, preferred peel method and intended application. Include any current transfer problems and recorded process settings if available so our team can recommend a useful sample shortlist.
